Residential
Lewisham (London UK)

m
An example of how homes can be customized to accommodated bikes more efficiently. The owner felt the front porch was wasted space and he thought he should use it more efficiently. So the entrance has been changed into cycle storage and offers security as bicycles are not visible from the inside. The facility provides parking for an average of 5 bikes. Access to the facility is via the entrance door, which has strong locks.

Cost of provision
The entire refurbishment of the owners’ house cost £25,000, the bike storage section cost approximately £500, including the framing and the two front doors

Strengths
• Convenient
• Easy to come in and out of flat through the front instead of tracking dirt into the house by bringing the bike into the house and through the back doorway
• Secure as it is visible from the inside
• Doesn’t really need a lot of maintenance

Weaknesses
• Without furniture, space is convenient but may allow bikes to rub and scratch against each other.
