Child
Typically children’s bikes are of diamond or step through frame construction and have14-20 inch wheels (depending on the age of the child). They are single speed or have low number of gears, these being set up in a similar ration to those on a mountain bike – giving lower pedal resistance, higher pedal cadence and overall lower speeds.
Most modern children’s bicycles favour aluminium rims over steel or alloy, as they are stronger, lighter and offer more abrasion against brake pads, providing greater traction and shorter stopping distance. Overall sizing depends on the age and size of the child. A child needs to be able to stand over the top tube with both feet flat on the ground. Children’s bikes are measured by their wheel size not their frame size. Most childrens' bikes provide fixing points for stabilisers.
